Default Trail riding for a newbie

My buddy recently purchased his first dirt bike and I want to take him trail riding. Anyone have some suggestions that is somewhat close and actually open this time of year? The tracks are my last option as I want him to be able to just get a feel for the bike.

Berthoud (aka VDR) has a lot of wide easy trails to ride that you can't see from the interstate. You might want to check it out on google earth. All the "trails" are to the west of the motocross tracks.

I have been to VDR multiple times. They are the last on my list.

I dunno what's open up by Fall River reservoir, but those trails are fairly easy...Rampart is mostly open, but will be congested on the weekends.

I am hoping since there is a big race at Thunder Valley tomorrow we might miss most of the crowd. Right idea though, something simple that he can put around on and just get used to it.

Lots of places between Buffalo Creek or Bailey and Deckers. Hope on a FS Rd and have it. Hills, sharp turns, ruts, narrow spots, water crossings...but all perfectly acceptable for a beginner. Just a bit of a drive from Greeley.
