It's your house, your time so you can do what you like but let me ask you the inverse of your question: What good can come from answering an unsolicited doorbell?
If I'm expecting someone they can text/call and let me know they're coming and/or let me know when they're here. If I'm not expecting someone and they don't know my mobile number then I seriously doubt I've won millions of dollars and it's Ed McMahon delivering the check & balloons.

I have yet to see an impersonator with a legit looking police uniform from photos or video. If you are concerned that the people at the door are not the police, call dispatch and confirm that they have officers on a call at that location. If they don't, I imagine the police would want to contact these individuals. They may be connected to numerous other crimes if they are going that far.
Did anyone else hear, "it could be retaliation" at the beginning of the interview?
I've done some 'citizen academies' because they're a blast. I'm always baffled by the amount of time spent on this exact subject. Inevitably at some point the topic will come up (usually from some timid frail woman) and we'll waste hours talking about how you can tell and the basis is always invariably 'We don't use shitty cars, shitty uniforms or sketchy looking individuals' Now, I'm paraphrasing but it amazes me how many people are completely devoid of common sense anymore.

Ha! Not a lot of cops have the ghetto look to them. Now, I say that, but those of you familiar with DC Metro may also be laughing. I met numerous officers there that concerned me a little.
But usually smaller/metro area PD's are professional looking and it is very easy to tell the difference. And their dispatch will usually answer right away and have solid knowledge on the location of their officers.
I have had numerous citizens tell me in the middle of the night that the reason they took so long was because once they verified it was me they put their gun away. I tell them that I appreciate that they are aware of their surroundings and appreciate putting the gun away before opening the door.

I'll generally answer the door, but only after I verify who/how many people are out there(no cover for someone to hide and blitz me). I'll step outside with my weapon on my hip, and close the door behind me. Sometimes it's the neighbors asking if they can park in front of the driveway for a few minutes, sometimes it's people hocking candy/magazines/newspapers/religion, only twice has someone set my Spidey Sense™ tingling, and I tersely asked them to vacate the premises, and verified that they did so without loitering.
