Those stands always weirded me out for that exact reason. Seems way too easy to go off one of the sides!
Driving a car up onto one of those is fun, because you can't usually see anything. The ones like in the picture are at least flat on top and easy to position. The ones that just point into the air pretty much guarantee that the vehicle is an automatic.
