Sure the method is stupid but this is a huge step forward for people who here-to-fore would have insisted that their students try to empathize with their would be killers and figure out what they had done to deserve being murdered.

    Silver linings and all that.
It reminds me of active shooter training at my workplace... the "run, hide, fight" plan...
at one point when they mentioned "if there is no other alternative" and you have to fight- "you should throw something heavy at the shooter, like a stapler"

(yes, they actually said stapler)... so I pictured a red swingline

Throwing a can of beans might work as long as you don't throw like a girl.

When you think about it, a can of soup may distract the shooter enough to be tackled, knocked out, put in pain, etc.

Has anyone tried to shoot accurately while someone is throwing something at you?

The normal human response is to duck, cover the head, etc.

Might be more effective if you could run up and smash them upside their head.

A soup can (or a red swingline stapler) could do some serious damage... I don't know if a 10 year old could throw hard enough to achieve the desired affect, but the fighting mindset is a valuable tool.

I'll send a 1oz copper bullet to the first person that can provide proof of real training offering soup can avoidance drills.

Way off track for this thread, but the elementary school I went to(Eiber in Lakewood) had a fire door in each classroom that went directly outside. They were located such that breaking a window wouldn't allow you to reach the door opening mechanism, and there were no outside handles, so they presented a minimal external security risk. I doubt that the designers had active shooters in mind, but it is an effective solution. If you can't be cornered in a room, they can't shoot you like fish stacked in a milk crate.

This sounds like 1 of the 2 elementary schools I went to, as well as the middle-school.... it made for an easy lockdown inside too, as each grade was in it's own "wing" with class rooms on either side of the hall. There was one main entry into the "wing" that could be cordoned off easily from the rest of the school.
