Default Cut inlet for door lock?

I have a door that I put a new knob on. The little "thingy" that goes in and out to hold the door the frame (not the deadbolt, but the tongue thingy) has a frame around it I can not take off. This interferes with being able to close the door. How do I (and what do I use) to cut into the door so it will be flush....

Lord I hope that makes sense....

    Thanks,
    Bear

Put it in place and draw the shape and cut out with a chisel. Tap on the line then shave out.

What Stag said. Make sure you have the hole for the bolt drilled first. If the door isn't solid oak or something, you can probably trace the outline of the area you need with a razor knife, then chisel from there.

A good chisel is one of those tools that you don't really appreciate until you actually need one. A good sharp chisel will make very quick and easy work for this project. Even if you have to buy a cheap one from Home Depot, it is the RIGHT tool for the job and will make it much easier.

I actually used a sawzall blade and a pair of vice grips to do this once a long time ago on a slow day.

    I got free lunch.

Its alot easier to buy the right latch kit that has all 3 options though

Thank you to all. I went out and got a chisel... Little piece of metal ain't cheap! HA! However, worked great, though for my first time I made the inlet a too deep... Live and learn.

Problem solved! Stay tuned for more!
