David Ayer almost never does anything outside of LA cop movies. Training Day, Street Kings, Harsh Times, End of Watch, SWAT, Dark Blue, The Fast and the Furious I've all seen. His movies are rarely stellar, but non unwatchable. I will say that if the trailer is representative of the movie, he's trying WAY too hard to sell the woes of war theme. It could just be bad editing, but it's like they just tried to write some foreboding, profound one-sentence line for each scene.
"You think it can't get worse-it can and it will."
"The dying's not done; the killing's not done."
"I started this war killing Germans in Africa. Now I'm killing Germans in Germany."
"Do your job; do what you're here for."
"The deals are peaceful; history is violent."
Subtlety is always better.
