Strip it, then tru oil, don't sand anything. Use a toothbrush to clean checkering while striping and to work in truoil.

I bought Arrow wood finish from an older gentleman at the gun show. I've used it to touch up an old Sheridan and a marlin 30-30. both times I was pleased with the results.
