Do we have any washer/dryer repairmen?

I am looking to surprise the wife with a new washer and dryer. I have been reading the reviews on the sets Home Depot has on sale. Every one of them have a few negative reviews about catastrophic failure. Is anyone familiar enough to recommend a set that would be a good long term investment?

Not a repairman but we bought a set of the Affinity front load washer/dryer when they first came out for cheap and have never had a single problem in about 8 years of use. I realize this is a rather small segment but it's our personal experience. It looks like they've gone up in price quite a bit over the years since we got ours & I really didn't expect to get a decade of trouble-free use out of what we paid. For me, I wouldn't spend a lot of money. Every time we shop washers & dryers it seems that the entry level models have the same components with less features. We don't use features. We clean and dry our clothes so for us we've always had fantastic luck buying entry-level model washer & dryers.

I have yet to see any item be 100% fool proof. Our front loading W&D set ,Maytag (W) Admiral (Gas dryer) have been holding up going on 7-8 years. Does that mean a comprobable set will last as long?

How many loads per day estimated will be run, you have kids that require 2 runs per, day or just you & the spouse? The spouse does 1 W&D per day, unless we're lazy then it gets done day 2. Having pets , exercising ( gym & adult), messy visitors (with kids) will skew run times.

That's her prepper mentality. Better to do 1x and have clean items than be unable to run and not have clean items. After the tornado 6? yes ago being that much more on top of it helps, down the road. She also prefers to do a small - med load daily than be doing a few loads of laundry, wasting 1/2 the day.

They all have issues. Whirlpool cabrio line are the worst in my mind.

A lot of people don't like the high efficiency units. You have to buy high dollar soap and when they break its expensive.

I recomend the 300-400 range lower end models for long term investment.

Electrolux front loaders, 6 years old. Washer holding up well. Dryer started burning clothing during warranty period. Serviced and worked ok until last year when it needed a new belt. Two months ago it acted up and it ended up needing a new inlet thermocouple, which is probably why it was burning clothes when new. At least this time it failed so that it would not burn things. Can't recommend.
Family of 5 so we do work the units hard!

Have the top-load Maytag I paid $300 for on sale. Energy Star rated and has held up 5 years now. Does a good job for us.

Stay away from GE washers and dryers. They have switched to polycarbonate cluch and drive parts. They claim they are just as durable I can guarantee you they are not.
