    Default Shooting Problem Bears

Some locals, in town, are having a problem with bears getting into their trash/compost. Most responses are to secure the trash. One brain trust posted how he can't wait for the bear to get into his compost again. He's itchin' to unleash the fury of his AR-15 upon the bear.

My question is, what would the DOW/LE response be toward someone baiting a bear (open compost), firing at the bear with a .223/5.56 and firing at said bear within the city limits?

A honked off bear just might take care of the problem gun owner. Seriously? .223?

He would probably be in a bit of hot water and need to show proof the bear was a threat. Caliber really should not be an issue in a self defense situation. But if he has already posted that he was itching to get a bear with his ar, and actually follows through with it, and they find him negligent in leaving his trash or baiting them, im positive they would prosecute.

Baiting a bear and then shooting it would be VERY risky and could cause the homeowner a lot of grief/money/time. To even shoot a bear that has entered your house will still cause a lot of questions being asked by the DOW.

223/556 will kill a bear with ease. It all about shot placement, and if that fails you got 30rds to take care of business. Talk to people from Alaska they use ar's and mini14 for protection every day. Now as to baiting a bear just to kill it that is bullshit.

The CO DOW will furnish rubber buckshot if asked for by people who are harassed by bears. They furnished some for me but I do live out in the sticks.

Hang a can of bear spray covered in peanut butter near the trash.

I'd say that would be a great way for him/her to get their picture on the 10 O'Clock news and possibly wind up in the BCJ for a few days.

    Judicious application of C-4.

But I didn't shoot the bears officer.....
