Default Recommendation for AC recharge for the house

I've PMed the two recommended members on here (one member twice already) and have not gotten a reply. So I'm reaching out to see if there are any other recommendations.

My HVAC unit is working and blowing cold. I just havent have it serviced in a few years. And could prob too off the freon.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Excellent service from http://www.highefficiencydenver.com/

Tech let me watch and showed me how I could perform routine maintenance myself.

If it works and is blowing cold why would it need a refrigerant top off. Take the top off the outside unit and clean the leaves and garbage out, wash out the coils.

^^ This is the most overlooked maintenance item for home and business HVAC. 5-10 minutes hosing off the condensor / coils, removing that accumulated dirt and leaves makes a big difference in operation.

Of course an annual check of your HVAC system can save you $$$ in the long run.

I will sort of agree. If you are not physically able to do the basic cleaning of your condenser then yes. But generally the tech will not be able to tell if a relay or switch will fail in a week or a year. They generally just clean it and hook up gauges to check pressures. Either they are good or it need recharged. Personally I wont pay someone 150 bucks to come to my house with a screwdriver and use my hose and water to wash off the coils. If the air is cold and the unit doesnt run an extra long time to get it cold your pressures are likely fine. The only ones I have seen fail in a way that could have been prevented was from complete neglect of even the easiest basic maintenance.

It is funny to hear shops preach preventative maintenance. Autos especially. They is really no preventative maintenance. Other than changing your oils and greasing if you can. Unless they have some magic ball that will tell them when a good part will go bad. If something is worn out or not working right you didnt prevent anything, it is already needing replacement.

Cottonwoods and/or willows. Neighbor behind me has both. Sometimes the coils look like they ingested a cat. I have to spray the coils off with the hose regularly, but it works.
Liberals never met a slippery slope they didn't grease.

I guess its not just a top off, more of a inspection since i haven't had one in a few years. I'll leave it to the professionals to recommend if it needs to be topped off.

On the ac and refrigerant front. Seems like my cars ac (08 R32) is taking longer and longer to get going and get cold. Once in a while seems to get there quick, but usually I'd say it's close to 5mins. Vs girlfriends stupid Juke and the cold is there inside a minute pretty much.
