    Default Hodgens 4895

    I am going to reload some 308s and I have a 8 pounder of hodgens 4895.
    Do i need magnum primers? I can't find load data for this, Thanks for the help.

    I've looked there and everywhere else. I know that ball powders uses magnum primmer. I just want to comfirm. I only have 100 Large Rifle magnum's but alot of standard LR.

    If anyone cares, hodgens says standard primers are A OK. If shooting is to be done at 20 degrees or lower(hunting), then go with a magnum primmer.

    Speer manuals list when magnum primers are recommended and DOES NOT list as recommended in a 308 with 4895. That doesn't mean you can't use them, but you might need to back the load down a little if you use them.
    I say lets all remove the warning labels and let nature take its course.

    A 308 Winchester is not a magnum caliber. You just need standard Large Rifle Primers. Winchester primers are my favorite.

    41 grains of 4895 with a 168 grain match bullet is an excellent load.

    4895 was the original powder developed for militry 30-06 and 308 (7.62 NATO) Winchester.

    Sometimes using a magnum primer will help accuracy and give a lower ES and SD. Sometimes it doesent do a thing to accuracy.
