    Default Operation Honey Badger

With some of the posts on the NOAA aircraft flying around, I thought I'd share this video of a super STOL C-130 developed to rescue the Iran hostages. It is an amazing story and something you wont see at an airshow.

The surviving soccer field (Credible Sport) Hurk is on a stick in Warner Robbins GA.

Pretty cool stuff, when it worked.

The rockets worked as designed, somebody hit the wrong button, or at the wrong time....
when you're playing with that kind of power, there is no margin for error.

Amazing what that airframe can handle, but dropping it onto the runway from that height was just too much.

The Test Flight Engineer fired the second (lower) set of fwd facing rockets too early and stalled the plane.

The tests had been going well up until that point. I think they were doing most of the testing down near/at Duke Field on Eglin AFB. Cant remember.

    Ewwwww! That's nasty!
I enjoy seeing the Blue Angels' C-130 take off with it's rocket boosters.

My understanding is that they don't do that anymore because the surplus supply ( WWII/Korea vintage) rocket motors are used up.

I remember hearing about a C-130 that had a RATO bottle break loose on take-off, the thing entered the cargo area and bounced around before burning out. I think it was one of the NYANG Herc's they still fly to the South Pole. The 130 will go down as one of the 10 most important and successful aircraft in aviation history, no doubt.
