Yes season 8 of the new show. Starting from the beginning is not necessary, a lot are not on netflix and a lot have been lost to history. I would suggest starting from the new show. Most people refer to the old as "Classic Doctor Who" while the new is just Doctor Who.

Every new season more or less explains what is happening at the beginning. Suggesting a starting point is hard for me. Honestly, while I do enjoy some of the older ones, some are a bit too dry for my taste. And the new ones might appeal more to our taste in TV. The show changed drastically when it was rebooted in 2005. Here are my suggestions:

From the New Series 2005 on...
To get hooked. Episode 1 season 5 "The Eleventh hour" I'll catch hell for recommending a Matt Smith doctor here, but I think the episode is a bit funny, and shows that the doctor is kind of a badass.

To get some history: Episode 1 Season 1 "Rose" Be advise the first series of the "new" Who had some terrible acting and writing, almost cheesy but cheesy to the point it's good.

To see the Doctor as a badass: Waters of Mars Season 4 Episode 17. One of my favorites.

Most of the "Classic" Doctor Who I like is not on Netflix, but if you're curious try season 3 Spearhead From Space. It's on Netflix
