Went up last week... It rained... Not the sign I had been hoping for ( only got out for one small scouting trip) kicked one bull out on the way in one morning! Pretty sure he took out half the Forrest! And that was it... Saw some good wallows and found a ton of tracks in one area with a nice rub line... Just happened to be where I bumped the big fella... May have to do a sit over the wallow .. We will see what it looks like when I get back up there Wednesday!
i don't care how good of shape you're in those mountains still kick my ass! Or maybe it's the lack of oxygen at 10,000 but either way it was fun and can't wait to get back up there and wander around looking for wapati!
I got to hunt Friday eve., Sat, and then Sun morning. I called in 1 single spike to 5 yards, and my partner and I got to about 35 yards on a cow but we couldn't get a shot do to thick cover. Heard a couple of bulls bugle Sat. afternoon, but they were on the wrong side of the fence, as usual.
You in south, central or northern colorado and central or western? Evening bugles or am? I'm trying to get a feel for when bulls bugles and if it is consistent for the area or what. We have the hardest time judging. One area I hunt up north central will have bugling going on, but then nothing in Central central. And big difference depending on pressure as well.
double post...ooopppss!

unit 28. The bugling "pattern" doesn't and has never made sense to me. Seems like in the same unit there can be guys hearing bugles all day long, while there's others not hearing but a bugle every now and then. The bulls we heard Sat. were late afternoon. I assume they kept bugling more and more as the day went on, but they were moving further and further into private, so they got out of hearing range of us I'm sure.
We also got visited by a game warden Sat. evening in camp. Youngest wipper snapper I've ever seen in a uniform. Maybe it's because I'm starting to get long in the tooth, but this kid didn't look old enough to be out of college. BUT, he checked our licenses, checked our bows for any electronics attached, visited for a short period, and was on his way.
i went up to 511 today, not a single bugle up and down RR road. I think it's just to damn hot. Last year, exactly to the same date, it was a frig'n chorus of bugles...

Was up the last couple days. Got within 20 yards of a bull in super thick timber late in the evening, could smell him, hear him breath, hear him move...but couldn't see him. Wind shifted and he slowly worked his way out of there. Not a single bugle, except for this morning, a muzzleloader from out of state dropped in below me at dark and bugled, I just used it to my advantage and figured if he got a response I would sneak in and catch a bull off guard if one bugled, but no luck , when It got light enough and hot enough where I figured any elk were moved from the area, I called the guy almost in, then disappeared!
And I've had it with fugn cats...was heating up chili on the fire last night, had my lantern going, and my headlamp on. I always look around a little bit at dark because bears have come through camp before, well this time a lion was about 100 yards off coming down a game trail near the dirt road I parked off of. I lit his ass up with my ultra bright Cree and had my G26 drawn and started heading his/her way. It quickly did a 180 and was not seen again, but I still got on my quad and went up and down the road spotlighting for it.
im about ready to get some dogs and I'm gonna kill as many of these things as I can.
This thread needs successful hunt pics. We need dead elk in this thread!
Up near unit 16 for a few days this week. No bugling there either.
