Last week I heard a lot of bugles and called a monster in to 11 yards and when I drew back on him my arrows which hang lower than my bow drug across the fallen tree in front of me and he stopped with his head behind a tree. Which would have been perfect except he also had brush covering his vitals. I went back and forth in my head to try to put one through the brush at him and just when I found a hole and decided to shoot which was almost 2 whole seconds he bolted! Sucked! I was crazy bummed. I ran into another bull bugling and he was probably only 60 yards away I should have bugled back but instead I gave cow calls and he circled down wind and walked of bugling! I don't know if he smelled me or just didn't smell a cow but he didn't blow out or anything. Couldn't go this weekend but hoping to go next weekend.

What area was this? Private ground or public? Good amount of hunting pressure?

Talking about this and looking at your guys pictures, are there any units that don't have a massive ton of beetle kill. I've been hunting 37 and 371 the last several weeks, and the amount of down trees is stupid. We can't go 10 feet without having to crawl under or climb over downed trees. With it like that, there has been no way to put the stalk on.

Spent the last 9 days hunting in 58 for my first time ever. Learned a lot, saw a lot of animals I hadn't ever seen in the wild before (turkeys, badger, owl, etc). We saw every listed game animal in our unit but a bear or a cat. There was ZERO bugling. I think it was too hot, but I'm new and don't know much. A single spike walked by in the woods and we had cow tags. My hunting partners told me I'll never have a hunt like this again in my life, because we came across exactly zero other hunters in the area we were in. There were a couple on the other side of the road and mountain, but no one else within miles of us.

I could have filled either a doe or buck tag every single day. Due to the zero pressure from hunters, the deer were just cruising around and wouldn't run away unless you spooked them. Excited to try again (and hopefully get deer) next year.

Beautiful images, Firehaus! Each of those photos look like scenes in the area I hunt outside the Flat Tops. You got me salivating. Can't wait to get into the country.

Saw a flatbed Ford with Kansas plates headed east on I70 couple days ago. Had a big cooler(small chest freezer I assume had dry ice in it) and two fresh racks(1 spike and what looked to be a nice 4pt) on it. That is all I have seen or heard of. Rough early season.

Called a nice 6x6 in for my hunting partner. 8 yards we measured it at. Right at the end of shooting light on Thursday. Right in the shoulder. No blood. Only hair. We searched and searched and searched, not a drop of blood, no smell days later. I'm sure the bull is fine, but man were we disappointed. My dad shot on like that a long time ago. The bull swam across a pond, shoot the arrow out and ran off.
i passed on 2 cows on Friday in hopes of seeing the bull they were with, but a couple of hunters totally F'd it up trying to come in, not paying attention to the wind, loud, and they really really sucked at bugling.
saturday was close in the evening but it got too dark to shoot by the time the bull was within any kind of how range. And today was horrible. Not a thing.
