Default 30 round AR mag problem

Having an odd problem with a magazine....

I have one standard USGI Brownells mag, that for some odd reason, won't click into the mag release if there's an even number of rounds in it.

I know it's the mag, cause I tried my others and they don't do it.

I can't see anything obviously wrong with it, and I've tried bending out the little locking tab, but it makes no difference. Odd number of rounds, and it engages just fine.

I don't want to just pitch it, have any of you run into that issue, and if so, how did you fix it?

is the bolt/carrier in the closed/locked position? If so, try slamming the mag a bit harder in there. it has to compress down the ammo just a bit for the mag to lock in place.

have you tried to adjust your mag release? push in hard on the button side with a screw driver or something (that won't scratch) and it just screws in and out.

is the magazine starting to crack at the compression points on the mag? (look at the from and back and see where they put the mag together)

all I can think of for now.

Dont spend $50 worth of time on a $15 problem.

Throw it in the trash and move on.

pull the spring and follower first though if you do toss it.

also, maybe try to switch out the spring and follower with another mag and see what happens.

yeah, I tried pushing it in as hard as possible, and nothing, unless i put an odd number of rounds in it, so that there isn't a round directly in front of the hole that catches the mag release. Ive tried adjusting the mag release, but secrewing it in and out only changes how far the button protrudes.

It's a relativley new mag, and although I would just toss it, I'm the kind of person who has to figure out what's wrong with something. It's bothering me.
Really odd thing though, is that if I insert it with an odd number of rounds, it stays in after firing, even with an even number.

If I figure it out, Ill let you guys know.

you said it is a brownells mag? call them and tell them. I would almost guarantee they will give you a new one.

UPDATE, figured out what it was. It for some reason, and I have no explanation for this, was the Silver Bear steel cased ammo I was using. I switched to brass cased, and it works just fine. Just to verify, I put the silver bear back in, and it did it again, even withe the bullets in no perticular order.

I still think there's something worng with the mag though, cause If I put the silver bear in one of my Pmags, I have no issue.
I have no clue as to why. I'm just gonna call Brownells and have them warranty it.

Thats odd, I've never heard of a round blocking the hole in the mag. Even more reasons to go with pmag I suppose.

I'm with sniper7 on this one, call brownells and get a new mag, maybe the hole in that one is in the wrong position, but if that were so you'd think it wouldn't lock in at all.
