I'm no great shakes as a parent, but I've found the secret to this. There's a battery-powered plastic thing that has a bunch of buttons on it that Comcast gave me. It gives me pretty much total control over what shows up on my TV.

Aside: is tv still the idiot box if it's a flatscreen instead of a box?
