Oh, and mom's homemade chicken noodle soup, oh Jesus. She made her own noodles.....made a big batch of dough, rolled it out flat, then sliced up these big, thick, fat noodles. Oh lawdy that was good! Same with the chicken and dumplings.
Bacon Grease AND Garlic, is the only way to do any kind of home fry, hash brown etc. along with peppers, onions, and garlic.

I know what you mean. Our grandmother made a world class lemon meringue pie, every thing she cooked was from scratch. Even watching her make them, no one ever came close.

I believe part of family cooking was the comfort level of being in their home. We'd do thanksgiving, or Christmas in the 2 bedroom apt her and my grandfather raised 6 kids. Between the kids, her grand kids and in-laws there would be 28 people eating. Adults in the boys room, kids in the hallway. Never a complaint, never an argument. Something pop up, she'd be there with her hands balled up asking who wants to be first, in that thick off the boat irish accent.

She died while cooking dinner, always in the kitchen.

    Damn we miss you gramma.
