The President is not a member of the military and as such returning a salute is arguably a breech of protocol. So whether it's a proper salute or a flippant one with a coffee in his hand is a non issue. The tradition of returning the Marines' salutes while getting off Marine 1 is a Reagan era invention (not long standing tradition).
But hell, if this is what we can impeach him on, why not.
Under our system the military is strictly under civilian control. So while the Commander in Chief is the leader of the military he is still a civilian. That is the design. Civilians are not required to return salutes (although many do as a sign of respect ... and yes I get it, this joker doesn't respect).

That's all well and good, but if obummer doesn't care, he shouldn't salute. Or rather if he can't take the time to do it properly, don't do it at all.... imo, saluting with a coffee in the hand is basically a "yeah yeah f*** you" gesture. As CIC, there's no excuse for not knowing the significance of it.

I completely understand from a veteran's point of view why this is upsetting to see our CIC do. As some have already mentioned, yes, this is not "required" by the POTUS to return a salute, but rather something done out of respect. Which I think many people have forgotten, Obama does not respect our country, our troops, nor what this country was founded on. So for those who are going back & forth on this, I'll just say this; If he's going to salute, do it right or don't do it at all. If he's not going to salute, then understand that is his prerogative and not a requirement. Obama is a socialist POS and nothing he does can or will surprise me anymore.
