I got up close last year near the Bobtail mine off Jones Pass. I was going to take a picture and then my brain said WALK AWAY, so I did. Later in the day I saw one on the other side of the valley I was in.
This was around Kenosha Pass. Didn't realize they were that far south.

Had a young bull come through the trees at me and a buddy while we were quartering an elk this weekend. Bull moose was with two cows and feeling tough. He was 20 yards away. One warning shot from the 9mm and lots of yelling didn't stop him from advancing on us. 2 more shots in the dirt and much louder yelling and he finally walked away. Ugh.
I had seen him earlier that day with one cow so I never expected him to stumble on us two ridges over while we quartered the elk later that evening.
PS: near lost lake north of vail.
This was a very fertile spring and summer for all kinds of animals. I've seen more mini-bears up at Camp Alexander this summer than I can recall any year before. We've had baby rabbits all over the place both in my subdivision and at Peterson AFB and I had field mice and even a garter snake get inside the house this year.
