Found New Rifle at the Range

Not going to say what range or what kind of rifle because as far as I know the owner has not claimed it yet. So I and my son were the first at the range this morning and after shooting by ourselves for a few minutes I look down the stands and I can't believe my eyes. It's a nice like new condition rifle, worth about $1,700.00 retail, just sitting there by it's lonesome. Gave it to the range officer once he showed up and will send an email to the board of the range. I was there until about 10:30 and no one know showed up freaked out looking for it. Crazy.

Sent an email to President of the Range and told him it was with the range officer for the day. Update once I know more.

I did mention with the new laws he may have a problem. I didn't take possession only check to make sure it was safe.

A couple years ago, I found a really nice, like brand new, rather high end digital camera (with no ID what so ever) in our local Dairy Queen parking lot and no one else was in the entire lot. Took it into the DQ and told them to give it to their Manager and in case the owner comes back for it, be sure to get his/her name and phone number, as I want to check with them and if no one claims it within a couple weeks, I want to be the new owner. Waited two weeks and went back to the DQ to check the status and NO ONE knew anything about it - zero!! That DQ went out of business about two years ago.

You think about it could be a conflict here. Here just me and my 7 year old son alone on the range and I see it. For safety reasons, when around a unknown weapon it is my duty as a father and responsible gun own to know it's condition, right? Do I break a law by checking it? BTW once I knew its condition I left it there and waited for the range to officially open to the public and inform said RO.

But now the RO has possession. Can he maintain it for < 72 hours before turning it into who, the police? Has he violated any law by taking possession of it? Did he take possession of it from you? It's an unsecured weapon for cryin out loud. I guess you're supposed to stay away from such a dangerous military ghost gun assault style 30 magazine clip laser guided heat seeking death machine and just let the po po handle it?

The whole thing is just bonkers.
