The criminals only fired 100 rounds during the 55 mile chase. How does anyone besides criminals get 100 or more rounds of ammunition in California?

Why not blame the bank- high capacity vaults are the only reason these kinds of crimes are committed in the first place...

Sounds convenient in a way. Kill the hostage and the surviving robber gets charged for it. Makes sense, but also would make people have much greater reckless abandon going in knowing that.
