    Default Next trip: Steamboat Springs

In case you missed my thread on visiting "Ft. Collins", my wife and I like to visit places around the state that she (and sometimes me too) has never been before.

We're not sure when we'll be taking this trip, but sometime during the ski season my wife and I want to visit Steamboat Springs. I've been through there during the summer, but neither of us has ever visited during the winter. Neither of us ski's, snowboards, or gets involved in cold weather outdoor sports. We like to look out the windows of a warm & cozy indoor environment at the snow. One thing we've both wanted to do is stay a night or two in a ski lodge. So, this is where I need the memberships help.

For those of you familiar with Steamboat, maybe you can recommend a place to stay. Initially, here's what we'd like considered in the lodging choice:

    • Decent/clean/well maintained accommodations. I can't stand places that make me wonder if I'll be bringing bud bugs home with me or that just look worn out.
    • We'd really like a place with the Hollywood stereotypical ski lodge common great room with the fireplace and comfy chairs where folks can sit around and read a book, drink cocoa or libations, etc.
    • Single Queen or King sized bed.
    • Hot tub - even better if there are rooms with private hot tubs.
    • Onsite pub/bar to grab a drink in the evening
    • Obviously, someplace not too expensive - or that has great deals would be preferable.

I know I'll be adding to that list, but it's something to start with. Whatcha got?

My cousins kids are going to school up there, i'll get the 411 for you. It's going to be real pricey during ski season. Public Hot Tub and you're concerned with bed bugs icky. Be nice if you could get a room with sauna.

Yeah, I just added something about price to my post. We expect it to be very expensive, but maybe we can find some deals. We figure that we need to enjoy ourselves a little and since we don't do this (ever), we can splurge a little.

I'm also going to look at what possible deals the MWR office at the base I work on might have for military (retiree) folks.

I know; right!? I'm not real fond of the public tub & would really prefer private, but I'll take what .i can get. I'll check out those links.

I'm not a winter sports guy either but I have been to Steamboat in Winter and Summer and stayed at various accommodations from the worn out hotel to Steamboat Grand to renting a house, none were the Hollywood version of a Ski Lodge. I have stayed at Lodges in many locations and the rooms do not usually have fire places but the lodge's great room usually does and that is where the enjoyment is, talking to other guests.

Plenty of great places to eat if you can find the local's spots and stay away from the tourist eateries.

Good luck on your trip and have FUN!!

Naw. I've got an ice hut & gear but I stopped enjoying ice fishing several years ago. Too many times of watching the trout & salmon bump my bait but never take it and leaning over the hole all day just hurt my neck & back.

I don't think you can get there through Estes during the winter, just FYI. I'm pretty sure you have to go I-70 to 40 and over Berthoud Pass and through Winter Park and Granby.

Stayed twice at the steamboat grand and liked it. One of the room / condo we had was huge with 2 stone fireplaces in the master and living room. I cannot recommend the restaurant at the grand, because it takes 2 h to get a table if you are lucky.... In town, there is a really good steakhouse (8th street steak house).

There are a lot of newer places to stay up near the ski area at the ski village. I personally like staying in town because it's more of a small town atmosphere that you can access on foot. I have not been there in a few years so I do not have any specific places in town to stay. Just keep in mind the town and ski area are separated.
