On a related note- we rented a townhouse in Aurora for a while. During the spring, the sun would hit the sensors JUST right, and it would trigger the garage door to open. That might be something to keep in mind before using claymores or claxons by way of alarm...

It has never happened to me personally. Working as a police officer I have investigated numerous suspicious occurrences where this was the case. I am mainly wanting an extra layer of security and peace of mind in the event something gets forgotten or I end up inside the house for a few minutes or longer by accident.
spend a few extra bucks and get one from radio shack. the hf one eats batteries in comparison
Oh wise one thank you for chiming in. Will definitely take a look.
Also, I think it should be noted that additionally we park our cars in the garage but I still believe they should warm up on bitter mornings for at least a few minutes. The cars are locked however I would like a sensor up while the garage is open and I step back into the house.
I know I should probably stay with the car, but that's not going to happen.
That should fit the bill. Radio Shack also used to sell a cheap IR beam break door alarm system - they're all over Amazon now (as was posted elsewhere.)
I installed one of these, and a remote light switch as well that sends alerts to my phone if the door is open for longer than x minutes. I can then close the door, turn on/off the lights... Of course, when I'm traveling and the wife is home, I always call or text her first.

They also make models for older doors, and even have a setup that can be retrofitted to even older non-compatible stuff to remotely sense if the door is open or closed.

That is just about one of the most awesome things I have ever seen (mind you I don't get crazy on too much technology, the wife programs all the remotes).
The plus side is that I have a brand new house and brand new garage door opener....wait for it....made by chamberlain (I really am excited by the text alert thing).
