so i wanted to change the combination on my Stack On total defense safe i recently picked up from a fellow board member (thanks Mike)

i looked for days on the internet and could not find one link to tell you how to accomplish this on a manual dial combination gun safe.

so i took it upon myself to learn a quick, down and dirty way to change the combination at least once. I though i would share it with the users of the board.

note i did not take the actual mechanism apart in any way so if you have some mechanical ability you should be able to do this safely and without damaging your safe.

follow the images in the link to understand the procedure.http://s261.photobucket.com/albums/i...bum_view_click

1 open your safe normally.
2. remove the inner fire wall of your safe, mine had 8 screws
3. be sure the arm bar is still in the open position, it should be engaged with the tumblers for the lock, you don't want these to turn.
4 you should see the back of the tumblers as posted in the photos with the arm bar engaged. (it is the galvanized metal bar in the right of the photos)
5. remove the 11/16 nylock nut at the back of the lock set (note this also holds the dial in the lock set) be sure not to let it fall out of the front of the safe, and do not let it turn off of the last digit of the original combo.
the tumblers are also held by a c-clip washer so they are unaffected by the removal of this nut.
6. remove the clawed washer under the nut.
7. you should see a winged washer that is set on the two teeth behind the nut and clawed washer.
8. remove this washer and rotate it 90 degrees. this should set the winged washer on the second set of teeth.
reinstall the clawed washer and nylock nut, be sure not to allow the dial to turn off of the last original digit until you have snugged the nylock down. be sure not to overtighten the nut as it will prevent the dial from moving freely.
9. disengage the arm bar (lock your safe with the door open)
10. using the dial open the safe as usual, as the tumblers come back into position to open the safe take note of the new digit for each tumbler. your safe should operate as usual with a new 3 digit code.

if your tumblers do not look like the ones in the photos you may not want to attempt this operation.
