Accorded to the documentation from the investigation, during the first two attempts to fire his weapon, Brown's hand obstructed the hammer ability to contact the firing pin.(This is Ofc Wilsons determination based on Brown's hand placement) During his attempt to fire a second shot, he had a spent case in the chamber due to the slide being prevented from cycling by Brown.
From my experience as a firearms instructor and armor, if the pistol was failing to fire due to out of spec springs or other unknown aspect due to lack of maintenance, he would have issues fire the ten other shots he got off.
We may never know why he got clicks. The way I look at it, is if Brown had gotten his finger on the trigger and pulled it while it was pressed in to Wilson's lap, it would not have gone bang, saving Wilson. Wilson was able to fight through the problem, and won the fight!
