Serious answer? Because Susie Soccer Mom and Joe Student who make up the overwhelming majority of the current voting populace don't understand the necessity and presence of violence. Middle America thinks that all war is bad, and trying to get them behind going full-force into the middle East is political suicide after 13 years in Afghanistan, and 10 in Iraq. Joe Student thinks you're just there for oil and your imperialistic conquests, MAAAANNNNN. Susie Homemaker thinks that through proper diplomatic relations and international aide, we can defeat hatred.
And the fence-sitters, elderly, and veterans aren't too keen on the idea of having more of our boys lose life and limb for people who beg for our help, then turn around and sell us out to the MB/AQ/ISIS/Taliban. I understand, without condoning or condemning, to quote Osterman.
Kinda reminds me of this:
A friend of mine from Texas explained
it all to me: "Here in west Texas, I
have rattlesnakes on my place, living among us. I have killed a rattlesnake
on the front porch. I have killed a rattlesnake on the back porch. I have
killed rattlesnakes in the barn, in the
shop and on the driveway. In fact, I
kill every rattlesnake I encounter.
I kill rattlesnakes because I know a rattlesnake will bite me and inject me
with poison. I don't stop to wonder
WHY a rattlesnake will bite me; I know
it WILL bite me because it's a rattlesnake and that's what rattlesnakes do.
I don't try to reason with a rattlesnake or have a "meaningful dialogue"with it. I just kill it. I don't try to get to know the rattlesnake better so I can find a way to live with the rattlesnakes and convince them not to biteme. I just kill them. I don't quiz a rattlesnake to see if I can find out
where the other snakes are, because
(a) it won't tell me and (b) I already know they live on my place. So, I
just kill the rattlesnake and move on to
the next one.
I don't look for ways I might be able to change the rattlesnake to a
non-poisonous rat snake...I just kill it.
Oh, and on occasion, I accidentally kill
a rat snake because I thought it was a rattlesnake at the time. Also, I know for every rattlesnake I kill, two more are lurking out there in the brush. In my lifetime I will never be able to rid my
place of rattlesnakes.
Do I fear them ? Not really. Do I respect what they can do to me and my
family ? Yes !!! And because of that respect, I give them the fair justice they
deserve....I kill them...As a country, we should start giving more thought to the fact that these jihadists' are telling the world their goal is to kill Americans and destroy our way of life. They have just posted two graphic videos on the internet
showing them beheading Americans.
They are serious. They are exactly like the
Rattlesnakes I have been speaking about.
It is high time for us to start acting accordingly !
I love this country. It's the damn government I'm afraid of !!!

All analogies break down at some point and so will this one, but humor me:
The Middle East is similar to Ferguson, MO. The US military are the police. Muslims are the residents of Ferguson and some of the non-residents who have come to visit Ferguson. Israel is the city council, Mayor and business owners of Ferguson. The current administration in Washington is the UN.
When the police do their job, they make the Israeli's nervous, and they hope the Muslims do not get too riled up when the police do what they can to protect them. If things get out of hand, the Israeli's have to go vigilante and take matters into their own hands which upsets the UN. Eventually, when the Israeli's and the police put down the Muslims, the UN begins passing resolutions criticizing the tactics used and going on about the unfairness of the use of force against the non-violent residents of the Middle East.
Does it matter how the Middle East or Ferguson got the way they are? The police will not fix the problems in Ferguson any more than the US military will fix the problems in the Middle East. The people in Ferguson and in other similar communities need to want peace and have to work hard to find ways to live peacefully with their neighbors. This doesn't seem likely in the Middle East and as long as the residents of communities of Ferguson decide that they would rather be violent and destructive, they will not have peace either.
The police and the military are reactive. They can proactively strike targets but they do not target without provocation, thus ultimately they are reactive to a threat. We can shoot a bad actor here or there. We can strike a terrorist leader or cell here or there, but we do not occupy and we do not rule as conquerors. The residents of these places will either find ways to make peace or they will go on killing one another. Most Muslims are killed by other Muslims. You can complete the corollary.
Police officers using deadly force and inserting US troops are drastic measures and ones that come with consequences. I would hope that neither happens without a great deal of forethought and consideration of all of those consequences. I firmly believe that a person can do everything right and still be wrong. Ask Darren Wilson about that. Ask any Vietnam vet about that. Ask any combat vet about that. I believe that winning is not the same thing as killing your enemy. Killing your enemy is an admission that you have no other options left to you.
Are we there yet with the Middle East?
Be safe.
