Why do we say? "I got to TAKE a poop." Educated debate

Yes my title of this thread says what it means. Looking for opinions, educated but of course I know I will get a little sarcasm, some jokes, etc. (We all need a good laugh.)




Back story; my wife who is Mexican (US Citizen for many years) and proud of it is bilingual; both Spanish and English. Even after 20 years of speaking English she asks me quite often questions regarding American English slang.

Tonight she asked me; "Why do you say? I am going to TAKE a poop. Your are not taking anything, why on Gods green earth would you voluntarily TAKE a poop. You dispose of it."

For the life of me I could not really come up with a good answer. Just something we say right? In fact I myself started questioning where in history did we start saying; TAKE or TAKING a poop.

What say you all? Where in history did this start and of course why do we say this when it really doesn't make any sense?

Nope still doesn't make sense, verb or a noun it is about possession, opinion, resemble (that is kind of funny), return exchange, closest would be removal such as example "Take off" or to "to withdraw or remove from: "She was taken off the night shift."

This is the response that I found that best explains this concept:

"Take" is an example of what linguists call a "light" verb. It has a standard meaning -- the one where someone gains possession of a thing -- but it has a bunch of other uses too. For example, think of the different meanings of "take" in take a walk, take a bath, take a vitamin, take a nap, take the sun, take a swim, take a class, take a trip, take a moment, take a look, take a tour, take my hand, take a chill pill, take a stab at it, take a job, et cetera, et cetera. Mostly those are things you DO, not things you gain possession of, even though the things you're taking in those phrases are nouns. Same with "take a dump". I hate to say it's "just an expression", but that's basically the answer. Expressions with light verbs are often not literally interpretable. (Other light verbs include "make", "do", and "go".)
