Comments on Mossberg 930 Tactical

Looking at picking up a 930 tactical. I'd like to know if they are reliable? I know the 870, 1100, 500, and 590 are gtg, but the 887 is garbage...

Also, any other comments on ergonomics, good accessories, recoil etc are appreciated.

As far I've read, I see mixed reviews on the 930 series. Some run right out of the gate, and others can't go more than 2 rounds without a malfunction. I initially looked at a JM pro for 3-gun and I just couldn't get past the fit and finish, action felt gritty, trigger was meh. Not sure how short you need the barrel to be, but Stoeger m3000's are popular, and they're comparatively priced near the 930. Other than that, there's Beretta, FNH, or Benelli in the next price range.

I have fun w/ my 930 tactical, but personally I found except for slugs, I hate the irons it has. If you want a 930, I agree on the JM pro. More capacity and a sighting system better for shooting airborne stuff. If need be throw an optic on still an option. (I messed around with a fastfire on mine a bit.)


The early ones had issues, the newer ones at least when I got mine tended to run fine but started needing some internals cleaned for sure as round count climbs.



Right now my eye is on the Versamax, unless I get distracted and do something dumb like go after the SRM1216.

When I got into 3 gun I bought a 930SPX that had been converted for 3 gun (extended mag tube, XS sights, bigger safety). It runs well. Only one hiccup and that was when I loaded to full capacity (8) of buckshot and couldn't get the first round to chamber. I downloaded by 1, chambered a round and plus up to 7 in the tube. It ran fine but I started the stage one round short.
The problem is I don't have a ton of confidence in the gun so I'll be getting an M3000 down the road.

When you are looking at a shotgun that will serve you well for say 20K rounds in 3Gun, there are really 3 proven (and one possible) choices. The M2, M3000 and VersaMax are all proven, and there are plusses and minuses to each. The new A5 has some promise, but it has not been shot long enough in 3Gun dress to be for sure.

The other guns, due to the style of gas systems, will not be as reliable or durable. Not bashing, just the way it is. An inertia or ARGO operating system are the only two that work well with the significant changes we make to the shotguns original "design parameters" without ill effect. That is true for 1100s, SLPs and 930s. Furthermore, due to the changes and increased abuse, these other systems will not reliably make it to 10K rounds without complete overhauls, and in some cases, re-machining of the receiver to fit trigger group steel inserts.

If a person wants to shoot a few local matches, sure, you can get one of these other options, but it will likely bite you at some point. When the M3000 can be set up very well for under $750, there really is not another choice until you hit the $1K mark...at least if you are serious about 3Gun.

Now do not take this as an insult to the SLP, 1100 or 930s. Given their stock hunting/clay sport trims, they are good shotguns that will go past 10K rounds without issues.

My buddy has a 930 and he seems to have all sorts of issues. Get's maybe 2-3 rounds and there's a FTE/FTF/etc. Something that happens to make him stop shooting. Maybe its the shells he's using. I don't know but I wanted one originally but don't now that Ive seen his run. :shrugs:

Many of the issues can be fixed, but it takes a very good working knowledge of the systems, how they interact and what certain issues look like in terms of failures.

My comments related to 3Gun are transferable to the other models when the magazine capacity goes above more than about 6 shells.

I have one.. it doesn't handle light loads very well..refused to cycle on anything but full power loads.. Granted.. it was fun and at home it doesn't have target loads in it.. but still.. it's also a PAIN to clean.
