    Default Making a smartphone teen-proof?

So we switched to another carrier and were forced to get our almost-14 year old a smartphone (he currently has an old flip phone that can't access the web).
Their cheapest option was the HTC Desire 510 and its running version 1.42.652.1of the software.
We don't want to put heavy restrictions on it, but we'd like to block porn sites and such and get notifications if/when restricted sites are accessed. Disabling all comms on a timer at night would be cool too.
All of the apps I've seen on the play store cost money and have terrible reviews. Is there an app you've had good experiences with, or a version of Android to install on it that has these settings built in?

Which carrier? AT&T has a thing called smart limits that can control text and call limits based on time or specific phone numbers. Not sure if it regulates web content.

    Tmo also has parental controls...

On an android device: go to settings, Users. Create an admnin user profile for you, and setup an admin password and device password/pin.

Create a second user profile, choose Restricted User. Turn off everything you do not like. That will be the kid profile.

Also, I think you can turn on some kind of restrictions using your google play account (you had to create one when you first sign up on an android device).

It's Sprint. I'm definitely gonna try that admin-user thing tomorrow, thanks for the suggestion.
