Almost forgot a small part of the equation. I need to figure out what I want to carry and how I want to carry it.
On your own property or where you have the owner's permission to do so.
This will also give you the feel for the type/brand of holster you prefer. You'll probably go through 2-3 before you find the right one.
Just remember, you get what you pay for applies to holsters too.

A G-lock, no holster and waistband appendix carry.............. But be sure to wear a ballistic rated Kevlar cup.Almost forgot a small part of the equation. I need to figure out what I want to carry and how I want to carry it.

I started with a comp tac minotaur m&p shield, never felt comfortable, switched to a Flashbang Betty and it's a night and day difference! Yes, the betty was first created with women in mind, but it's so damn comfy I don't care!
