Hiking with a pistol in your backpack?

I was wondering if its legal for me to have a pistol in my backpack, while i'm hiking on the trails. I'm not a CCW holder. 'yet'. But I don't want to be in volation of any colorado laws.

Actually it is not quite that simple. If you are "transporting" an unloaded firearm in a locked container in your luggage you do not need a permit. If you are traveling via a "private means on conveyance" and you have the pistol "for protection while traveling" you don't need a permit...

If only the law was clear and simple...

I just hike with it on my hip in an IWB holster. I don't have a permit. It's not the right way to do it, but it's not like I'm walking through the mall or anything. I've never been approached by any park rangers or anything and asked about what I'm carrying, is that common?

Put in on a belt and keep it in the open. if you really need it, it will be there and ready.

Get that CCW permit and then you can do what you feel most comfortable with.

I don't carry exposed as I don't like the image it creates. However, there is a M640 .357 under my shirt most of the time.

That's what makes me feel comfortable.
