I've always wanted to try it, but can't justify paying the $150 a bottle. Is it like a brandy ?

You drink it like brandy, it hits the nose like one too. But even at 28% ABV, it isn't distilled so you get different notes than you would get from a brandy as all the malt and yeast characteristics are still there along with the wood aging.
