Default How cool is this? (Grade School "Survival" Homework)

My daughter brought this home this week.

They've been reading books like "My Side of the Mountain" and similar, but this is the first I've heard of the fact that the entire quarter from a multi-discipline perspective is based on a survival theme. I scanned and OCR'd the first page of the handout, but it goes on over multiple pages to suggest projects like dehydrating foot, fire-making, fishing, making snares and traps, falconry (makes sense if you read the book), etc.

My daughter has requested her project be making a "survival pack" (modified BOB).

This will be much more fun than helping out with math homework!

SURVIVAL FAIR is COMING March 13, 2015
    IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Please read, sign, and return by Wednesday, January 21, 2015!
    Dear Parents and Students,
Quarter 3 is well-underway, and we are gearing up for an exciting cross-
curricular unit that will culminate with The Survival Fair on March 13, in the
CHCMS atrium from 10:30 A. M. until 12:00 noon. This special event will
showcase work from our sixth-graders who will be selecting a project,
Completing a presentation board, and creating a separate visual to explain or
demonstrate their topic when guests visit their stations. This
interdisciplinary project will be accomplished by doing certain assignments
at school, but the assembly of the trifold and visual component will be
done at home. Please mark your calendars now and plan to visit the fair to
    view all the students' work!

What, exactly, IS the Survival Fair and why are we doing this project?
Understanding the purpose of this project is important. First, in Language
Arts this quarter, students are reading novels with a survival theme. They
will read, do related assignments in small groups, discuss and contemplate
ways that people have adapted to harsh arctic environments to Survive and
thrive. Likewise, in Science, Social Studies, and Bible, students will focus on
various aspects of survival. This project will give students an opportunity to
combine their reading, writing, research, critical thinking, science, social
studies, and artistic abilities to create a project that reflects their
integrated learning. Students will see how all disciplines are related and
complementary. Students will take one aspect of a broad topic (survival) and
do an in-depth exploration of a particular facet of survival. When each
student contributes a project of special interest to himself, everyone’s
    learning is multiplied.

On the following pages, please note action steps to take so that you will be
prepared to meet all project expectations in a timely way. Parents, once your
student has decided what kind of project and visual he/she would like to do,
please sign the project proposal sheet, indicating that you give approval for
his/her choice. Bring your signed sheet to school by Wednesday, January 21.
Thank you for your support of your student and his/ her learning goals!

Obviously NOT a public school. Cool assignment!
Light a fire for a man, and he'll be warm for a day, light a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life...

Discussion is an exchange of intelligence. Argument is an exchange of
ignorance. Ever found a liberal that you can have a discussion with?

    This is damn cool though.
Don't knock it until you try it. Great with extra (foot) cheese.

You know, treating foot issues in the field would probably be another good presentation topic, but I'm pretty sure mom would veto that one.

This certainly isn't a public school. Good for you, and your kid.

Yep, didn't mention that. It's sure not cheap, but we're very happy both with the education and the environment they are in. There can be some weirdness when it comes to things like fundraising due to the mixture of family financial situations there, but all-in-all it's been a very good experience.

If I was in dire straights, I might dehydrate my left hand before any foot (I'm a righty btw). At least I could still walk and whack the zombie horde one handed with my katana...and still have a tasty and preserved snack to take along on my journey to...wherever the hell I'm going.

I'd love to see the whole paper on that. I wonder if I could somehow use it TO put it in as part of the Appleseed I do at my public school.
