    In the old days, non electronic, they had a book I think called withholding tables. It would show how much is withheld from the check based on pay and claimed exemptions. check the IRS website.

    You can pickup the 1040 booklet in post offices, libraries, etc etc. But here is the PDF copy. Match your NET income to the chart.

    Or use one of a million calculators online, including IRS.gov, if your employer doesn't offer one.

    Obviously, this only works in very simple tax situations.

    Good PSA!

    I have to wait until mid-Feb each year because Fidelity (IRA) insists they have an exemption from the Jan 30 deadline. I've called to challenge it and get nowhere.

    Even though nothing there is taxable other than a small retail account I never touch, I always to want to make sure I have everything so I don't have to amend in case there are surprises (usually taxable interest).
