Unjacketed bullets for .300 BLK in an AR

I tried some powder coated bullets from Missouri Bullet Company. They cycled fine at first. It turns out I was injecting lead into the gas rings through the gas port. It made quite a mess.

Any of you guys had success with bare or coated lead? Polymer or powder coating?

If not, what's the least expensive heavy jacketed bullets you've found? I've been hunting for pulled bullets or seconds, but haven't found any yet.

If you're subsonic, and they fit the bore, there's no reason linotype or a water dropped wheel weight alloy should lead your barrel. With plated and coated bullets, they'll often use a very soft alloy, if not straight lead. Scraping the coating when loading?

All I can tell you is I water drop wheel weights and shoot 240's through a .44 mag lever gun... they go about 1,680 fps and no problems with leading.


I don't think I'd try anything full speed / 55k psi with a lead bullet though...

It's not leading the barrel, it's injecting lead up the gas port, through the tube and into the bolt. The barrel itself didn't lead up at all.

Does not compute. Is the base of these bullets coated? Quick burning powder?

How soft is the alloy? if you can easily dent it with your fingernail (precision instrument), then I wouldn't run them with a gas port...

But I've never used anything but jacketed or plated in an AR or AK.

They were running about 1050 FPS. I shot about 250.
