Be very glad that if your family was home that we don't live in a antigun utopia, because they wouldn't have thought twice about braking in. But most punks know not to B&E a house in America when someone is home, because you don't know if they have a gun or not. And saying "I have a gun" is usually enough. You don't want to argue with someone like that.
Cameras are good but if you have the coin and you are really paranoid I would suggest a panic room.

I will keep my eyes out for scumbags selling anything that matches your stuff and report back. Sometimes you get lucky.

Today my castle was violated. Sometime mid morning some piece of shit scum bag mother fucker decided that he wanted what I had. The basement window was broke out and they made their entry. Luckily nobody was home. The house was not rummaged through as you would think, this was a quick grab and go. No major electronics where taken, the wife's jewelry and a few check books are gone. I made the worst mistake as a gun owner and left both gun safes unlocked after a range session the other day. By a stroke of luck no long guns are missing but they did take two pistols. Please be on the look out for a .25 auto derringer. It is a stainless frame with pearl grips. The other gun is a Ruger single six .22 Lr/ .22 mag revolver serial #26325856. They also took an IPad and the one that pisses me of the most is they took my two year old daughters piggy bank. My mother had it hand painted when she was born and has her name (Sydney) and her birth date (05/25/12) painted on it.

They didn't take a lot but that's what has me worried. I know they saw more and I'm wondering if they are planning on coming back. Security cameras and a complete system are on order for tomorrow. We all think this won't happen to us. We move to better neighborhoods, and do our best to give our kids what they need and want, but there are always lowlife shit heads that think they can take mine and yours. I will learn from this and adjust what I do and don't do. Keep you and yours safe.

About 20 years ago I had my house broken into,,,lost some things and some had value but the biggest part was the violation,,,sort of likened it to being raped, had a very uncomfortable feeling in my own damn house for a long time after. Was probably someone living in the neighborhood and with what was taken it was probably kids and not a pro.

I have a safealert in my safe that will alert me to the safe being opened, moved, fire etc when I am not home. Might be something you want to look into. I store more than just guns in my safe.

I have heard of those Safe Alerts, what's the cost for that service? Sounds like a good idea.
