Default 28 Nosler - Flash in the pan, or new 7mm heavyweight?

Ok, great... no stupid belt, well designed case. Seems to edge out 7mm RUM., seems to be a great long range hunting cartridge... Makes me wonder about bullet construction and shots under 200 yards.

What's your opinion on this? I think it makes more sense than the 26 Nosler (not as stupid overbore). Still, it seems to be a hunting only niche.

Seems like yet another answer to a question nobody asked. To each their own, but I really don't see the need with 7RUM already out there, and its already stupidly overbore and barrel life is out the window.

Its probably great for hunting outside of 200, but without perfect bullet selection for range, inside of 200 will make med size game look like a prairie dog smoked with a 22-250.

    Not my cup of tea.

Getting accurate ammo out of a hard kicker like it isn't gonna be easy. And by the time you get a load worked up and are comfortable shoot it at distance, your barrel is half way gone.

    I would rather shoot a 280 Ackley or a regular old 284.

Yup, plenty of other options that are performers out there without the extremeness of this thing, same issue I find with 7RUM. With 7 WSM, 7 RM, 284, 280/280 Ackley, 7SAUM, 7STW, etc I see no reason to go there. Recoil vs weight of the rifle, and the fact that 90% of the people that are going to buy it won't shoot it past about 400 and probably can't hit reliably past 300, it's going to be one of those calibers that's all the rage for a couple years at best, and then fizzle.

I mean really when you put the numbers to paper a plain old 7mm Rem mag can acomplish everything the 28Nosler will in the hands of 99% of the shooting and hunting public. When you look at 7 RM ballisticly, outside of VERY extreme hunting situations, there's not much advantage to the 28Nosler.

For instance take a 180 Berger moving @ 2925 fps out of a 7mm Rem Mag and you'll still get 1K ft lbs of energy @ 1100 yds. In what world of hunting do you really need more if you're doing it ethically, and are capable of getting first round hits at that kind of range?

I have a 300 RUM and it's light. I have found its exactly what Hoser is talking about.

    .
Educate me. Why the worry about this (or other similar) cartridge tearing up a barrel? I remember many people had the same worry about the 26 when it was introduced last year. What particular characteristics make a cartridge increase barrel wear?

Tons of hot powder shoved down a small hole.

The first couple inches get absolutely cooked in short order. Its even worse when the barrel gets hot.

Been staring at 7mm's lately and been gravitating towards the 280 AI... but building a big heavy tactical type rifle in 7 SAUM is appealing as well.

I've found it tough on big cases to get lighter bullets to perform consistently. Huge extreme spread. No es bueno for any kind of distance, so it's heavy for caliber or nothing.

I shot that damn rifle. Find a stock that adds about 15 pounds and that thing will be manageable.
