As far as I know it was a notification sent to FFL's. So I'd say it's probably true. Not that it really does anything for us. Wahooo! saves me a whooping $3. Still forced to do a BGC.

    From the email:

Colorado House Bill (HB) 13-1228 requires that a fee be collected for firearm background checks prior to a firearm transfer by a Federal Firearm Licensee (FFL). This law went into effect on March 20, 2013. Based on estimated expenses and projected firearms background check volume, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) initially set the fee at $10.00 per background check request.

This fee is reviewed by the CBI on an annual basis to determine if any adjustments are necessary. Adjustments to the fee may include the projected number of background check requests, changes in staffing levels to meet expected demand, or IT system enhancements that are needed in the operation of the InstaCheck Unit.

Upon examination of expenses, the CBI has determined a reduction in the fee is appropriate. Therefore, beginning Sunday, March 1, 2015 at 12:01 A.M. (MST), the CBI will reduce the fee for a firearm background check from $10.00 to $7.00 (USD). This time frame will allow FFLs to modify their point-of-sale or internal enterprise accounting systems. Any firearms background checks processed prior to this date will be assessed the $10.00 fee, including the February 1, 2015 through February 28, 2015 transactions listed on the invoice to be mailed the beginning of March 2015.

Now if we as private citizens can directly access CBI, or wave the BGC with a valid CCW for private purchase it would be a step in the right direction. I still have a real bur under my saddle when it comes to FFL's breaking the law and charging more than the mandated $10 transaction fee for private sales.

The $10/$7 is for the background check.. That money goes to the state and has nothing to do with the business. A business can charge whatever they want for the transfer.. Should they do it for free? How much work are you willing to do at your place of employment for free?

So they were overcharging by 30%

Repeal it all. If I was a gun dealer I would be on the phone to the law makers talking about how hard it is to do business and make money with these regulations. I'm sure it would turn a head sooner or later.

Per the law (as it was written) $10 to CBI and a Dealer may charge "up to" $10 for there service. So $20 total should be the max you pay anywhere.
