Default Threatening someone with a taser

I know a guy who was threatened by another guy with a taser last night. A verbal altercation escalated into the asshat brandishing a taser and threatening to use it OFFENSIVELY, not defensively, against an unarmed guy. "How would you like this?" and waving it around kind of shit. FWIW, the asshat started the altercation to begin with.

Cops were called and all parties were present when they got there. Cops said something like "We know he is mentally unstable but he didn't actually use the taser, so there's nothing we can do" and they left. The asshat dude is 42 yo and on permanent SS disability for mental problems. Apparently they have that info on file because nobody said a word about that to the cops.

This sound right to you guys?

Sure. Kind of like how it's OK to brandish a handgun and threaten people as long as you don't actually use it.

(I'd post the smiley slapping himself in the face but haven't figured that out on Tapatalk.)

I don't think a Taser would be considered a deadly weapon.

    Yup.

No injuries, no arrests. Both parties clear for warrants; separate and send on way...no report. Clear scene, respond to next call.

The cops could have cited said EDP, however this would likely have gone no where when the charges were later dropped by DA's office.

Could it have gone bad? Sure, but often you trust your instinct and play the odds that with some time and distance, people will not do something really bad.

Why was the guy you know, arguing with a crazy man? Just curious.

    Be safe.

Like I wrote, the crazy man instigated the ordeal and the guy I know really had no choice but to inject himself or others (kids, female) might have been harmed. Enough said there.

I did think it was interesting that the police knew the crazy man was, well, crazy. Does someone on SSD for mental problems get put on a list or something? Maybe I'm naive here, but shouldn't that be kinda confidential info?

If the "crazy" man was in an area he normally frequents, then the police would have had contact with him in the past. No one who does the job would be doing it long without paying attention to the surroundings and those who inhabit those surroundings.

Police in any jurisdiction will know the houses they visit most and the names of the people they deal with on a regular basis. Determining what the issues are that drive people to their circumstances is actually not that difficult.

So what I'm reading here, is the next time someone threatens me with a good time, and they don't deliver, I shouldn't bother calling the police?

^^ Or, you could call the police, get a little cranky with them, and maybe they could show you a good time with a Taser. And, you'd have a great story to tell.
