I guess the cop was pretty pissed at the tortfeaser and cited him for reckless driving. Usually for minor fender benders people only get careless.

looked it up- I remember that figure, but it was in the late 80's... apparently the average is about 27'... but the record is 560" (46 feet) in the winter of '89-90

I was hoping that would get called out. I didn't want to be the one to do it & repeat myself. Glad you did!

I think they're okay. They both said they feel a little sore now, but nothing we are worried about. I had assumed that my wife was stopped at a light and someone slid into her. Actually, she was approaching an intersection where she planned to make a right turn. She actually saw the guy lose control behind her in the mirror, and kept moving forward in an attempt to negotiate the turn to get out of the way before impact. She didn't make it and was actually rear-ended while she was moving forward. Good thing she wasn't stopped. I think that is part of the reason the officer was mad at the other driver. My wife saw the situation develop, kept moving forward, and was still able to avoid being pushed into any other cars, so like most rear-end accidents, this was completely avoidable.

It only shattered the rear bumper. Fortunately he has USAA and they've already accepted liability and everything. USAA is a great insurance company to work with, they don't mess around.
