Default Aviation buff: May 8th Celebration in DC, 70 WW2 airplanes in the air

    I want to go....

    Arsenal of Democracy:
World War II Victory Capitol Flyover
Seventy years ago, Feb. 4–11, 1945, Allied leaders met at the Yalta Conference to discuss the structure of the post-World War II world. To honor the heroes who fought in the War and those on the home front who produced the tanks, ships, and aircraft that enabled the United States and its Allies to achieve victory, one of the most diverse arrays of World War II aircraft ever assembled will fly above the skies of Washington, D.C. on Friday, May 8, 2015, to honor the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, as part of the Arsenal of Democracy: World War II Victory Capitol Flyover.
As part of a thrilling three-day celebration in the nation’s capital, the May 8 event will coincide with a ceremony for veterans at the National World War II Memorial, followed by dozens of World War II aircraft flying in historically sequenced formations overhead. The formations will represent the War’s major battles, from Pearl Harbor through the final air assault on Japan, and concluding with a missing man formation to “Taps.”

Victory Gala at the National Air & Space Museum
As a lead up to the Victory Capitol Flyover, a Victory Gala will be held at the National Air & Space Museum. We will celebrate our heroes and hear firsthand accounts of World War II encounters from the veterans themselves, including remarks by President George H.W. Bush.
The evening will be attended by friends of the aerospace community who share a demonstrated commitment to honoring our nation’s greatest generation. These will include senior military officials, corporate and association executives, veterans and our nation’s political leaders.

World War II Victory Capitol Flyover
The Arsenal of Democracy: World War II Victory Capitol Flyover will include 15 historically sequenced warbird formations that travel across our nation’s capital – from the World War II Memorial to the Capitol — on Friday, May 8, 2015. The Flyover will feature an assortment of warbirds representing the major battles of World War II, from Pearl Harbor through the final air offensive to defeat Japan. Never before has such a collection of WWII aircraft been assembled at one location, to honor the large assemblage of veterans gathered at the WWII Memorial.

    Family Day at Udvar-Hazy Center
A selection of the planes will be featured at the Smithsonian’s Udvar Hazy Center at Washington Dulles International Airport for a one day exhibition. Additional information to be added soon!

Almost 30 years since I've been out there. Cool memories.

Wow. I hope they put some of the guys who flew them during the war up in the formation. That would be pretty cool as not many are left, including my grandad who flew the SBD.

But that would violate the P-56 restricted airspace!

I probably won't make it back to DC till July this year. Fireworks are good, but the crowds suck.
