    I knew "Long Range Fever" was incurable, but didn't know it was so contagious!

    I would seriously look into what quickdraw is recommending. there is not really a better or worse time to buy LR stuff for pricing. Winter seems to have better in-stock options and gunsmiths have a "somewhat" smaller backlog. Glass is just as important as a rifle, so budget and find scope at the same time you look for a rifle. I also think your better off buying more than you think you need at the beginning. Upgrading LR stuff is pricy and not easy like upgrading AR's.

    Here is what I was planning:
    Remington 700 SPS Varmint 308
    Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44mm
    GG&G Aluminum Sniper Grade Rings 30mm
    Magpul Hunter 700 Stock (Maybe)
    Timney Trigger

    Roughly $1600 all in if I can find the right pricing. Its a budget build but I think I could have some fun with this setup.
