Place is incredible for sure. Your Hardtail would be fine, lots of guys had em, less weight to carry up the hike and bike sections. And there are a bunch of em...

We try to make it out to California once a year to visit my wife's family, someday I'd like to take 191 down to Flagstaff and spend a night or two in Moab along the way, do some biking while we are there.

Back from the dead!

So I'm actively shopping on Craigslist, Offer up, and FB Market place. I've pretty much set my price range around $500-$600 and for that reason looking at bikes a few years old.

The three options I'm set on currently are:
2015 Specialized Crave 29er $600
2015 Diamondback Mason 29er $500 (haven't negotiated with seller yet).
2009 Kona Hei Hei 2-9 Deluxe $400

My main question is on the Kona, is a 2009 still relevant in 2020, I'm not a hard-core cyclist and this would be my first FS, it's also the cheapest, yet it was a $3500 bike new. What would you do?

Ha. My bike is way old. Think I bought it in 1995. It's a Mongoose Hilltopper that I did a lot of upgrades on back in the day. I put som rockshox forks on it but it's still a hardtail. For me, rear suspension isn't needed because I spend very little time on the seat and I'm happy to let my legs absorb the bumps. Front suspension is a must because I usually have both hands on the bars. Did some trail riding with it but it was mostly used for "urban assaults".

I really don't think I need FS at this time, and I think I'm leaning towards one of the newer hardtails above, but with the Fox suspension on the Kona, it seems well spec'd for the price albeit the older bike.

Cool thing about the "older" bikes you are looking at is you can buy cheap and then upgrade whatever you think needs upgrading.

Yeah I won't buy new ever again, bikes seem to lose value worse than cars.

I'd go with one of the hardtails. Older FS bikes often didn't have the best geometry or parts. The DB has decent components, can't tell on the Specialized but likely good. Try to demo them. Lock out on front shock is a nice feature. Consider adding a dropper seat post to whatever you get.
