Cool thing about the "older" bikes you are looking at is you can buy cheap and then upgrade whatever you think needs upgrading.

Yeah I won't buy new ever again, bikes seem to lose value worse than cars.

I'd go with one of the hardtails. Older FS bikes often didn't have the best geometry or parts. The DB has decent components, can't tell on the Specialized but likely good. Try to demo them. Lock out on front shock is a nice feature. Consider adding a dropper seat post to whatever you get.

Thanks, I'm definitely leaning towards them, the DB owner appears to be willing to negotiate down from 500, the specialized is bottom dollar at 600. Seems the main difference is going to be 1x10 SRAM X7 on the DB vs 2x10 SRAM X5 front and Shimano Deore rear on the specialized, and of course front fork. I dont care for how the DB is sitting on the ground with fork in rocks, but that's just me being anal.

So I went against my policy of not buying new bikes, but I was directed to a really good local shop, and figured with small businesses being in a pinch right now, I'd make an exception.

Ended up with a 2020 Giant Talon 2 29er, which is enough bike for my current level of experience. It's already tubeless capable, so I'll likely go tubeless at some point, and go a bit wider on the tires, as well as adding a dropper seat post. Other than that, I'll likely upgrade drive train and suspension as it wears out.

On a side note, I was made aware of an awesome mountain bike park called Fantasy Island, that is 1.5 miles from my house, I'm really excited to check that out, but I've also got thousands of acres of state trust land right behind my house to explore, so yeah.

As for your previous post, yeah the 2009 bike is still relevant as long as it was a good bike with good components in 2009, Kona makes a good bike, I still ride my 2003 Gary Fisher Sugar 3. Still a great bike, original full suspension, disc brakes and tubeless tires. Pretty much the same thing you would be looking at today.

As for your previous post, yeah the 2009 bike is still relevant as long as it was a good bike with good components in 2009, Kona makes a good bike, I still ride my 2003 Gary Fisher Sugar 3. Still a great bike, original full suspension, disc brakes and tubeless tires. Pretty much the same thing you would be looking at today.

Considering most of my riding would be with my wife, and young kids, it just didn't make sense, I can always upgrade later. As for the Kona, I really like their bikes, I still have a nicely upgraded Kona Blast in storage, I really like that bike, but I was ready to move on from a 26" bike, I'll likely pass that bike on to my wife.


You have a good bike in that Gary Fisher, wish they were still making bikes.

Isn't it nice when there's so much open space, within minutes of your home.

It is wonderful, something I never had where I was at in Colorado. I just paid $20 for a family annual State land permit, that gives me access to everything behind my home, which is a lot.
