Not to mention, her smacking her kid doesn't exactly make up for the 14-18 years of non-parenting that led her kid to that point, anyways. Far from being a hero, that lady is a huge part of the problem.

You don't know that for sure. Sometimes, all the hard effort by one parent is undone by a community/circle of influence that says the opposite.

Fair enough. In that case, her plight is hopeless. She probably can't afford to move her and her kid out of there, she can't control her kid, and there's probably not much hope for her kid educating himself out of that environment.
