+1 on what jim said. Sounds like your sear spring broke or is stuck buy a bur or improper machining. I would strongly recommend taking out the trigger and inspecting it or take it to some one who knows what there looking for.

The issue sounds like the sear spring needs replacing, or engagement with hammer is worn. Not enough to cause a slam fire (for now) . When you buy a US H/T/S they do not come with the springs. Buy a new set of springs, NOT used take offs. Brownells carries them as do other vendors.
just to carry on the theme of stupid questions I have; if I replaced the trigger group, would it have a sear spring? I looked at the tapco units for AK, but didnt see any mention of it. Assuming it doesnt, should I do the sear spring first, then if that doesnt fix it, the trigger group? (Btw, no trigger slap, so I wouldnt have replaced the group otherwise)

I thought I read somewhere that ALG was going to be making a trigger for the AK. I'd look for one of those before I'd buy one from Tapco.

I'll look into that one right now, but in your experience would the sear spring be included in the trigger group kit? Just generally?

Sorry, I don't have a good answer on that.

If you figure it out let me know.

No they are not. If you're not experiencing trigger slap, as mentioned before buy a new set of springs from brownells.
