First, you need to define the modern battle field. I would argue that we need to prep for the future battlefield. What is that? It could be a near-peer competitor (China, Russia, etc) or it could be more of these complex battles against non-state actors. To write-off the tank as no longer needed or simply as coffins is absurd.

No doubt armor is helpful against less sophisticated enemies, but if they're advanced enough to have air support, the advantages are pretty much negated.

What? You said tanks will have a role as mobile artillery. Ever looked up the definition of artillery?

I don't need the dumbass S2 to tell me about threat artillery.

Not true. It is a pipe dream to think airpower is going to kill everything on the battlefield, especially armor.

The "network centric" battlefield means one aircraft could take out 8 tanks from 30 miles away.Easily...the bombs glide!

IIRC in Chechnya, a group of rebels took out the tracks on the point and rear tanks of a column in a narrow alley way. They rained down all kinds of explosives and molotovs forcing the tank crews to evacuate.

Yeah I think that was the first conflict back in 1995, when some dumbass running the show decided to roll up the heavy armor into grozny in a show of force against logical doctrine.

One of the next few battles had Russian army troops fighting Russian MVD (paramilitarized police) troops in a pitched battle for hours with heavy casualties before they realized they were on the same side.

When they got their act together, tanks were/are used in Chechnya to great advantage.

I liked the idea that the crew consisted of only two guys in an armored capsule.
