A year or so ago there was a woman here in La Veta who heard noises in her kitchen and found a bear trashing it. She tried to shoo it out and was severely mauled and in critical condition. Trust me, if I find a bear in my kitchen and I can't scare him back out I'll make a good bear out of him. I'd either take a dead paw and use the claws to tear my jeans or fire up my tractor and bury him on my 35 acres.
BTW: DOW says you cannot kill a bear or mountain lion attacking your dog since they are considered personal property and not livestock (I'd need to fire up the tractor again)

Chances are if you have to kill a bear (or mountain lion) you're either going to be in town where people aren't really going to question whether or not it was a "good shoot" (nobody is going to assume you were poaching in a city park) or you're going to be out in the the country where the 3 S's apply.

Haha! I had a bear IN my living room at 3am when I lived in Florissant. Luckily when I went to see what the comottion was he bailed out of the same window he crawled in through. Scared the crap out of me!

We see a bear or two in our "yard" probably 4 or more times per week during the summer. They're far better neighbors than people. They're quieter and all they ever want is to borrow a cup of sugar water. Learn how to live in bear country. Keep your trash secure, don't leave food in your car outside and remember to bring in your hummingbird feeders.

Now the same story from the perspective of the Bear:

There I was, pulling down a hummingbird feeder that was eight feet off some guys deck in Florissant (I just pulled some old jerky meat from a cache and was looking for some sweets)...

And here I saw, taking a dump, Biggest sombitch I've ever seen!
He was at least three feet wide sitting on the John!

I tapped on the window and he ambled off into the bathroom. And came back with a gun!

I left when I saw that!

    Still shaking.

    Won't sleep.

Other than the occasional tipping of trash cans, bears are mostly harmless around the house (unless there's cubs). While bears are capable of killing and eating you, most of the time they'll leave you alone and go away when you yell at them (again, unless there's cubs involved ... or they're starving, which is real rare).

Black Bears aren't all that aggressive. That doesn't mean you should try to pet them.

Honestly I'd rather have bears as neighbors than Democrats.
