I worked Memorial Day checking shooters into the range. The third guy through the door that morning attempted to convince me he was Military so he could get a discount on his fees. His only "proof" was a Marine Corps bumper sticker glued to the outside of his wallet. Being a Marine myself I asked him what unit he was or had been with, to which he replied " the 3-73rd Recon Division stationed in Ft. Collins Colorado" I told him that wasn't a real unit and charged him full price. He put up a half hearted protest saying that it was and he was a 3531 mechanic and that the "3-73rd Recon Div. was absolutely a real unit" then walked out after paying full price.
A few hours later I see this joker standing outside the office alone. I approached him and asked him what unit he had been with again and he replied " MAG 29 in Hawaii" (MAG 29 is in California) "Oh so you weren't with 3-73rd Recon Division?" I asked. " No, but my buddy was and he beat into that unit and Ive been upset about it ever since". I then informed him of who he was spouting his Bullshit to and asked why in the hell he would try and pull a stunt like that on Memorial day of all days just to try and save $3! We had a largely one sided conversation of him listening and me getting him up to speed on what might happen to him in the future if he were to say such things in the presence of say an actual Reconnaissance Marine, who happened to be in a bad mood. I walked off wishing ill will towards him and his ilk.

I get people trying to get the 10% LE/Mil discount on our website on a regular basis who are not LE/Mil. I went to changing the code every so often and requiring proof. Actual LE/Mil seem to be okay with it. I have had a few get really pissed, but turns out that they were not LE/Mil at all. Sad indeed.

Could have been interesting if my BiL was there. He was FORECON and probably wouldn't be so forgiving. Probably wouldn't get physical, but could verbally twist the guy into a pretzel.

Good grief, just because a location has "Fort" in its name doesn't mean there's an active military base there. Fort Collins hasn't had an active military base in about 150 years! (Camp Collins was abandoned in 1866 and officially decommissioned in 1867).

That and the fact that there is no Recon Division. Recon operates at Battalion level, Force at Company. And there has never been a Marine unit known as 3-73rd anything.

Well, I'm a civvie, so I wouldn't know bits like that, but I DO know that there's no military base in Fort Collins, hence why I latched on to that bit :P

Sure a marine unit only 1000 miles from the nearest ocean (I know there are some small marine/navy personel scattered around) but Ft. Collins.

I do know a Marine who works at CU-Boulder in ROTC. I assume though he would not be "stationed" there though?
